After an excitingly cold and frosty drive, we reached at the parking where we had pinned on the map the night before.
Area is extremely reachable and easy to find by using google maps. As we arrived early in the morning place was still under shade and still low degrees. Cold, really freezing cold at first. I remember our car was showing 0 degree.
However after few meters into the woods, sun was shining upon us. We even started removing the heavy layers as it suddenly change to 10 degrees.
We took around 2 hours for this hike. Going up was really fun and easy to do even with kids I reckon you can easily do. We did a small pause to enjoy the autumn colours with an incredible view around. Half way to the lake there is a refugee where you can use the bathrooms for free and enjoy their bar with some drinks if you like!
After the refugee, as we were climbing higher, there are some parts of the path with some rocks. I find it quite challenging but “fun” at the same time to walk on rocks with a full steady balance. It is totally doable so you don’t have to worry about it, just take your time and do not rush. After the rocky part there is only 15-20 mins to reach at this beautiful hidden lake on top of mountains. The views are truly incredible. We found a small path created with stones that goes half way into the water. This gave us a good the idea to take good reflection shots! 😊
Area is drone safe, as long as you make sure you do not break the peace in the environment, drone footage over the lake comes out great! 😊

Lago di Mognola

An unreal, incredible autumn foliage hike! A perfect place for every season however autumn was extra incredible with all the orange and red colours coming against the blue color from the lake and all the grey from the stones and the mountains. You can imagine a fantastic contrast!
First we went thru crunchy leaves covered forest. There is an incredible path at the beginning where it took us 20 mins to take photos and videos. Trees made a bridge over the path and the ground was almost fully covered with autumn leaves. Going under these trees made us feel like entering the universe of autumn coziness.
As we start the climb gently, every corner was beautiful to stop and catch some views. This hike took us more time that we estimated as we really took our time to enjoy every bit of it! We had several pauses before reaching the lake of Mognola. In the final pause, we found some artistically located stone houses. The photos from here came out pretty moody and artistic.
Last climb, after the stone houses, is a bit steeper but still easy. It took us around 10 mins to reach the point where the incredible lake of Mognola finally becomes visible 😊 There is a low woodbridge pass over the water as well. It adds a lot to the view!! It suddenly filled my heart with happiness and melt it with its cuteness.. I couldn’t wait but run to the lake arms open!
Lake has fantastic azzure color, quite clean and calm as many lakes here in Switzerland. We had a small picnic by the lake. Luckily the weather was amazing and could not be better. Area is drone safe, consider the peace of others and you will catch unbelievable drone shots if it is something you like to do!
On the way back we took a different path. We always study the paths before and if possible we always take the second path on our return. In Mognola, second path was a lot more exciting than the first! Here we are adding some photos from on our way back and the details of the path on the map.

Capanna Dotra

One of the best snow hikes we did this year was to this incredible little cute capanna Dotra!
Path is quite easy, there were other hikers, some groups in same day with us, they were wearing the snow racquets however we didn’t think it was necessary as the path was quite doable with normal winter boots. It took us around 1hr30m to reach the little restaurant/refugee up there. As we arrived 550 m higher, we could easily feel the climate change 😊 Combined with wind, when you stop hiking, you feel the cold in your bones after 5 mins. But no worries, we jumped in the restaurant and asked for 2 tea to get warm. People were sitting inside, it is a small capacity restaurant but very cute and bathrooms are perfectly clean. We had our lunch outside on the porch of the restaurant with a breathtaking view and we made some paw friends!! 😊
Dotra can definitely be a winter hideaway in Italian part of Swisslands. Highly recommended, easily reachable, there are Bnb houses in the area as well The mountain view from little houses are just completing the atmosphere to reach its cuteness overload.
During the hike, we spotted great angles to take some photos and videos. Because of the wind we didn’t use our drone friend this time but if we ever come back in summer time, we definitely will make it fly over Dotra.
